Two ways to move heat
Steam systems boil water and send steam up to radiators; hydronic systems pump hot water through radiators or loops. Steam is classic NYC; hydronic is common in newer and renovated buildings.
Comfort and control
Hydronic systems are generally easier to zone and modulate for even, controllable heat. Steam can be very comfortable when properly maintained, but it's less granular to control.
Maintenance realities
Steam demands specific care — venting, traps, skimming and correct pitch — or you get banging and uneven heat. Hydronic maintenance centers on circulators, air and water quality.
Which you have, and what to do
If you have steam, the answer is usually to maintain it well rather than rip it out. We service both and will tell you honestly whether yours is worth keeping or worth converting.
